The name "Quartet-Trio" was chosen to reflect the ensemble's unique and versatile musical approach, operating primarily as a trio while still embodying the spirit and musical complexity of a quartet. 

In an interview, Dr. Todd Williams explained that the name highlights the flexibility and potential for the group to bridge different ensemble dynamics. It is a trio (saxophone, bass, and drums) but conceptually includes the possibility of a fourth "voice," which could be an additional instrument or an element of the composition and improvisation itself, adding the depth and texture typically associated with a quartet. 

The core members of the group are: Robert Rucker -drums, Dr. Todd Williams - Reeds and Yuma Takagi - Bass

The ensemble released a project titled Introducing the Quartet Trio and has performed at notable jazz venues such as Smalls Jazz Club in New York City.
